Do you love a good sci-fi adventure but also want plenty of romance? The Lunar Chronicles is right up your lane!
If Star Wars and Disney Princesses had a book child, it would be The Lunar Chronicles.
Let’s talk about the plot and my impression of the book series to see if it should be your next read (spoiler alert, IT SHOULD!).
What Is The Lunar Chronicles Book Series?
The Lunar Chronicles
is a book series including four novels, one novella, and a collection of short stories. There’s also a graphic novel and an animated series in the works.
The primary novel series includes:
- Cinder
- Scarlet
- Cress
- Winter
A short prequel novella, Fairest, covers some events leading up to the primary series, but I recommend reading it after finishing the series to avoid spoilers.
Stars Above is a collection of short stories to give you a deeper understanding of your favorite series. The book includes seven prequel stories that help you better understand the different characters’ backgrounds.
You also receive a special treat as one short story covers Cinder and Kai’s (the main characters) first meeting from his perspective!
The last short story takes place two years after the novel series, so you can see how your favorite characters are adjusting to their new lives (and loves).
What Is The Lunar Chronicles About?
The Lunar Chronicles takes place in a dystopian world where futuristic technologies and superhuman abilities are predominant. However, the world still holds a reflection of modern politics and country borders. So you don’t need to worry about odd country names and unpronounceable character names (Looking at you, Sarah J. Maas!).
The series follows the story of Cinder, a cyborg mechanic orphan who lives with her stepmother and two step sisters. Her story starts as a futuristic retelling of Cinderella with unexpected twists.
Cinder’s story grows much larger than the fairytale, bringing in an evil queen of Luna (a colony on the moon) with sinister plans for the world and Cinder. To defeat Queen Levana, Cinder goes on a quest across the galaxy, where she befriends a group of misfits.
Each novel focuses on a different friend who joins Cinder’s loyal crew. The books also loosely follow the stories of various fairy tale characters, including Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Snow White.
Who Is the Book for (My Review)?
My Book Review Rating score:
- Spice: 2/5
- Language: 1/5
- Violence: 3/5
- Moral Message: 2/5
The book is considered young adult fiction as the characters are all teenagers, and the content is suitable for young readers. But it’s just as fun a read for adults as for teenagers!
The romance had me swooning (Captain Thorne really knows how to make a girl melt!). The dialogue was witty, emotional, and suspenseful throughout, keeping me engaged.
What I enjoyed the most was a fresh take on my favorite fairy tales. I knew what was coming in each story because I’d spent my childhood watching Cinderella, Snow White, and Tangled. And yet, the story still managed to surprise me with how it pulled off classic storylines in unexpected ways.
I especially loved how the book sections included quotes from the original story to tease what’s to come.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for clean fantasy romance books or clean YA fantasy books!
